Welcome to the new website of Derby Elks Rugby League Club. After 30 successful years as Derby City, 2021 saw the rebranding and relaunch of the club in the Midlands.
Despite the ongoing worldwide pandemic of Covid-19 2021 is destined to be a very positive season for the club with 14 games arranged versus all the Midlands clubs. This provides us an opportunity to field two teams for the first time in almost six years, ensuring that many of the 50 plus players registered will be given the opportunity of valuable game time.
Training started unusually late at the beginning of April this year with former Midlands Academy Head Coach Greg Mannion joining the coaching team. Instantly the club has seen numbers in attendance increase with each session providing testing situations and skill development. With games starting on the 9th of May time is precious but every player appears to be pulling in the right direction and working hard!
We continue to be grateful with the partnership that we are developing with League One side Coventry Bears. Even though in it’s infancy we have started to see players provided with opportunities within the Bears setup from Derby and look forward to using the resources available from the semi professional cub.
The sponsors of Derby Elks are invaluable and their support ensures that we are able to provide a club that welcomes players of all abilities and experience from as far away as Leicester, Burton, Nottingham, Belper, Derby and local towns such as Ilkeston.
The sponsors will be promoted through this website and all social media outlets over the coming months.
2020 had seen the planned introduction of the junior section building on the successful funding achieved from the RLWC project funding, led by Richard Chamberlain and a team of qualified coaches however Coronavirus scuppered this however the club sees this as an integral part of the future of the club so at the earliest opportunity we will be holding sample sessions for boys and girls of variable age. As a club the junior section has always been an import part providing players for the Open Age. Watch this space!
Ilkeston Rugby Union Club have provided a welcoming home to Derby Elks and we hope that all visitors to the ground in Ilkeston experience that same welcome from Carol and Gordon!
If anybody is looking at getting involved in playing rugby league or volunteering within the club, please get in contact, everybody is welcome!
