Match Report: Upton v Derby Elks – 10/06/2023

Round 4 – Upton RL 66 Derby Elks RL 8

Derby Elks continue their travels up North, with their fourth consecutive match away.

Team changes dramatic this week with six regulars missing and four players playing their first league matches after only a session each! This was always going to be a challenge, travelling to the league leaders but the Elks were buoyant that they could potentially cause an upset.

Very hot day again as the Summer continues to provide perfect rugby league conditions.

First 7 minutes were equal however the home side ceased an opportunity with a feeble tackle to score between the posts.

Next 12 minutes saw Derby starts to have the benefit of more ball in the Upton half and we’re rewarded with full back Lewis Thompson scoring a try to the right of the posts, putting him as the top points scorer in Derbys recent history. Conversion missed 6.4 to Upton.

The remainder of the half was equal for possession and played throughout the pitch however the home sides Hooker and support runners made easy inroads through the tiring Elks defence, with no experienced forwards on the bench any player entering the field were gaining experience in at the deep end!!

Enforced changes to the young Derby side bringing on for their debuts Galway Hargreaves, Alfie Chapman and Finlay West.

Derby valiantly hung on through the second half however some decisions made them have players off the field for periods of time which Upton grabbed at every opportunity.

Upton dominated and showed why they are having such a successful season, what was pleasing is that the Elks stuck to their guns, attempted to cover the pitch as well as possible and Hooker Cyrus Griffiths slipped over from a short distance. Unfortunately unconverted to bring the score to 60.8 with just 5 minutes to go.

Upton had the final response with a converted try.
