Match Report: Sherwood Wolfhunt v Derby Elks – 11/06/2022

Match Report – Sherwood Wolfhunt 11/06

Derby Elks RL made the shortest away match journey to Sherwood Wolfhunt RL in Mansfield Woodhouse. The match against the Yorkshire league 5 leaders was always going to be a massive challenge, again not helped with another change of personnel in the Elks side.

These things happen especially during the Summer holiday period but the depth at club ensured a competitive side would represent the club.

Sadly the first 10 minutes of the match changed the perception of the whole game and gave Coach Grant Hunter a headache of how we could compete with the well organised Wolfhunt side. Two converted tries by the home sides half back put the Elks on the back foot and potentially a cricket score!

Sherwood Wolfhunt consistently applied pressure and were rewarded with a further three converted tries in the first half. The story of the half wasn’t fully the home sides contribution but for a period of ten minutes Derby put Sherwood under pressure and were deservedly rewarded with a try from winger Tatenda Chirata.

Half Time – Sherwood Wolfhunt RL 30 Derby Elks RL 4

Decent crowd in glorious weather were rewarded with an entertaining spectacle, whilst the home side scored a further five converted tries and ensured the result was never in doubt, the Derby Elks players never gave up, only a fantastic last ditch tackle by the Wolfhunt full back stopped Chirata on the line doubling his tally.

The pressure that the home side provided ensured that the Elks never relaxed and played their own structure but as always this season is a learning and developing curve so all players can hold their heads high.

Great debut to rugby league by Ken Archer, many players putting their body on the line but the Ilkeston RUFC Chairman’s man of the match award went to Captain Joe Doughty who led from the front.
