Derby Elks travelled to Birmingham to play NEW Ravens RL in the Midlands Merit league. A league important ensuring valuable game time to players of all abilities and experience.

Ravens only had 8 players and with the Elks travelling with replacements the sides were evened to ensure an equal event.

It took the away team only 3 minutes to open the scoring, prop Lewis Sturgess breaking a number of tackles, try converted by Captain Liam Gavin 0.6.

Within a couple of minutes a penalty was conceded close to the Derby line and from a short distance the Ravens prop was unstoppable. Unconverted 4.6.

This woke the Elks up and after only a further couple of minutes Tyler Dicken hit and turned to score on the edge. Unconverted 4.10.

A pattern was appearing, lazy defence from the Elks resulted in penalties was going to be their downfall all afternoon and the Ravens scored their second try 8.10

Derby settled finally with two quick unconverted tries just before the half time. Firstly a début try for Winger Billy Cullen and a second for Sturgess. Both unconverted but meant that at half time it was NEW Ravens 8 Derby Elks 18

Reset, discuss the errors being made and the need for patience and the second half started.

Ever improving Winger Toni Fabris caught a loose ball and using his upper body strength broke a tackle to break 40 metres to score between the posts. Converted by Gavin 8.24

Two minutes later Cullen doubled his tally with pace down the left side being untouchable to the flaying tackle attempts, again converted by Gavin 8.30 to the Elks

Ravens bounced straight back with a well deserved converted try 14.30

17 minutes into the second half the ever impressive young Hooker Joe Acton was rewarded with his first try for the club, from a break by Sturgess down the left, some synics might think that this was jug avoidance, others would say great tackle by the Ravens side. Quick play saw Acton drop over the line to score. Unconverted. 14.34

The home side wouldn’t lay down and scored their fourth try of the afternoon. 18.34

With a little over ten minutes to go Sturgess convincingly broke the tackles in the centre and showed a clean pair of heels not expected from a prop to score his hatrick try. Converted by Gavin. 18.40 to Derby Elks

With the last play of the match Adam Walker making his return to league after almost 5 years scored in the corner for the Ravens, without Walker and Harry Chmiel playing the whole game for the home side this would have been a different event but today was a competitive game played in the right spirit and league being the winner and game time for all.

The final score was NEW Ravens RL 22 Derby Elks RL 40

The Ilkeston RUFC Chairman’s man of the match award went to Joe Acton how continues to show potential within the club and we look forward seeing him develop.
