Match Report: Lindley St Josephs v Derby Elks

Lindley St Joseph’s RL 6 Derby Elks RL 22

A nightmare few days, firstly the Elks were hit with unavailability of a number of squad players which whilst having a starting line up any replacements were a challenge.

Return to the fold of a couple of players ensured the fixture went ahead. Then best laid plans were thrown out as 9 off the players were stuck in traffic after an accident on the motorway, thankfully the home side were accommodating and allowed the game to be put back by 30 minutes.

Kick odd by the home side went long and the resulting penalty saw Derby apply pressure to the Lindley line, two repeat sets and Lewis Thompson crossed near the corner for his 61st try for the club, brilliantly converted by Half Back Liam Gavin 0.6

Derby dominated the next ten minutes and whilst completing sets were unable to come away with a reward.

Lindley had the best 20 minutes camped in the Elks half, only determined defence by the Elks and mistakes by the home side kept the score as it was for over 32 minutes.

From one of the Lindley attacks a loose pass was picked up by a winger Josh Lister who ran almost 90 yards away from the chasing defenders to score between the posts for his first try for the club, converted by Gavin 0.12

The home side continued to apply pressure and the Elks didn’t help themselves, poor discipline coupled with either pushing too much or wrong decisions kept Lindley in it.

With only 14 minutes left of the game and score still unchanged, a swift pass across the line saw Abe S’ua to score for the second game in succession, converted by Gavin 0.18

Score line was positive however the home side continued to test out Derby and were rewarded with a converted try in the corner to bring the score to 6.18 with less than 10 minutes to go.

Derby rounded the game off perfectly with a break by Half Back Charlie Clarke weaving in the Lindley half to almost reach the line but unselfishly passed for Captain Joe Doughty to score his 6th try of the campaign.

Final score – Lindley St Joseph’s RL 6 Derby Elks RL 22

Every player battled for each other and came off the pitch exhausted!! Stand out performances from S’ua, George Doughty and Cyrus Griffiths amongst others but work rate of Captain Doughty who led by example and Second Row Sailosi Wakawaka who was pivotal to today success saw a joint award of the Ilkeston RUFC Chairman’s man of the match award.

Week off next week after readjustment of fixtures but still plenty to work on in training.
