Match Report: Farnley Falcons v Derby Elks

On a typical  British Summer day we saw the Elks travelling north again to play Farnley Falcons of Leeds for the first time, a constant downpour dampened everybody’s expectation for the day.

Derby travelling with a full squad with a debut opportunity for Second Row Joel Duckworth.

Match started with pressure from the outset applied by the Elks with a repeat set setting them up close to the line. Today’s Hooker Owen Gregory took the two steps to score past a sleeping Farnley defence. Conversion missed 0.4

Farnley had the lion’s share of the next 10 minutes but a break from 30 yards out saw Tatenda Chirata score his first try of the day just to the side of the posts, converted by Liam Gavin 0.10 after 14 minutes.

Finally the home side saw some rewards from the lack of discipline of the Elks, scoring a converted try to close the gap, 6.10

Chirata crossed for his second of the day just 10 minutes later, again converted by Gavin and restored the lead to 6.16

Unfortunately the Elks seemed to be celebrating from the kick off as a poor kick receipt allowed the home side a scrum close to the Derby line, Farnley crossed for an unconverted try 10.16

Half time score – Farnley Falcons RL 10 Derby Elks RL 16

The second half overall was Derbys controlling most of the play and defending like lions, the ferocity rose and penalties came regular but the young side managed to keep their emotions controlled on a whole.

Derbys first try was scored by Joel Duckworth, a deft kick through from Gavin was picked up from the bounce for him to slide over the line, converted by Gavin after only 6 minutes 10.22

10 minutes later Farnley scored a converted try to close the gap slightly to 16.22 but the Elks continued to be in control no matter what was thrown at them!

The last 15 minutes was all Derby from a conversion point of view, picking their moments, a try firstly by Second Row Abe S’ua converted by Gavin followed by quick play down the right seeing quick pass for Gavin to slide through the gap to score, unconverted 16.32

Final score – Farnley Falcons RL 16 Derby Elks RL 32

Great result for Derby, picking up their second win of the season against a decent big team but showed their maturity by keeping their control and were rewarded with the tries.

Ilkeston RUFC Chairman’s man of the match to Tatenda Chirata for combination of his two tries but also powerful defensive game.

Off to Huddersfield next week to play the return match against Lindley St Joseph’s RL
