Match Report: Derby Elks v Upton 19/08/23

Derby Elks RL 12 Upton RL 34

Last home game of Derby Elks’ successful season in the Yorkshire league saw league leaders Upton visit the Stute en masse!

Early in the season over 60 points had been scored against the Elks and they were determined to put in a better performance and attempt to change the result.

It only took 5 minutes for Upton to get on the score sheet with a converted try. 0.6 to the visitors.

The next 20 minutes Derby had nominally the greater share of the possession and territory however finally an opportunity arose with Half Back Liam Gavin scoring his 5th try of the season strongly scoring in the corner, unconverted. 4.6 to Upton.

Upton crossed the line with just three minutes of the half remaining with a converted try.

Half Time Derby Elks RL 4 Upton RL 12

The first half was probably one of the better performances of the Elks this season, resilient in defence and with a little composure could have recorded a try or two but go into the second half optimistic.

This was reenforced almost immediately, Upton on the attack, but a loose pass gave Winger Ollie McMahon the opportunity to collect the ball in the 30 metre area and run the length of the pitch to score just to the side of the posts, unconverted 8.12 to Upton

Sadly Upton awoke, or more likely the Rochdale Hornets prop Jack Arnold awoke and ran through weak tackles, spaces with his experience and knowledge. WIth 25 minutes to go Upton had a 20 point gap.

Derby kept at it and replacement Winger Tyler Dicken strongly crossed in the corner with 19 minutes to go, unconverted 12.28

The Elks had many opportunities to close the gap, excellent defence from the visitors coupled with lack of space and opportunities resulted in 15 minutes of possession but no rewards.

Upton finished the game with a converted try, deserving the victory on the day however they knew it had been a tough match and the Elks had fought them all the way.

Upton were a pleasure to have at the club this afternoon, colourfully dressed and a great attribute to rugby league, wishing them a successful remainder of the season.
