Match Report: Derby Elks v Todmorden – 25/06/2022

Match report – Todmorden ARLFC – 25/06

Change of weather meant that the originally expect down pour came before the teams arrived at the Stute resulting in a slightly softened pitch and glorious sunshine!

This Yorkshire Mens League Division 5 game saw Todmorden ARLFC travelling over 100 miles into Derbyshire to play what turned out to be an entertaining match for the spectators.

Changes to the Derby Elks team coupled with a debut to Half Back Dan Wilson promised an opportunity of bouncing back after the recent defeat against Sherwood Wolfhunt.

Sizeable Todmorden side lined up with the Elks playing up field after losing the toss, almost from the off the home side started to show yardage gain with returning props Jake Pilgrim and Lewis Sturgess enjoying initial drives up the pitch.

After only 8 minutes Derby scored through quick wide ball allowing winger Tatenda Chirata to run half the pitch and score between the posts, converted by Liam Gavin 6.0

The momentum continued over the next 15 minutes with Sturgess scoring out wide after 12 minutes and quickly followed on 17 minutes with Chirata doubling his tally, again converted by Half Back Gavin. 16.0 with less than 20 minutes gone.

Derby weren’t content and are finally starting to learn about maintaining pressure points, Centre Abe Su’a picked up a ball in the home sides 20 metres, running right and just as two Todmorden players went to tackle him he offloaded a back hand pass to winger Sam Adey to run 65 metres and score between the posts even though almost tackled at the line. Converted by Dan Wilson 22.0

Probably the one of the best tries of the game happened in the 28th minute as a central play saw a selection of perfect passes by both backs and forwards to allow Niall Collett to score in the corner. The draw and pass by the players was text book.

In fairness to Todmorden they kept their heads up and were having to manage with reducing numbers as the Derby Elks medical support Ryan Smith tried to patch up the away teams players. Lively hooker Scott Bradley exposed the home sides lazy markers to score a try, converted by Dylan O’Shea. 26.6

Just before half time Tatenda completed his hat-trick of tries with a 40 metre break down the edge of the pitch to score left of the post for Wilson to add the extras.

Half Time Derby Elks RL 32 Todmorden ARLFC 6

Second half saw changes to the Derby side as players were rested/injured and interchanges introduced to gain experience.

On the 12th minute second row Bayleigh Steemson Weir broke and scored in the corner 36.6 to Derby

Five minutes later Lewis Elliman scored a text book try to cross the line, converted by Collett. 42.6 Derby.

65th minute Captain Joe Doughty broke the half way line and weaved through the close contact of the away team to score between the posts. Converted by Collett 48.6.

Last minute of the game after concerted pressure from the away team Bradley was rewarded with his second try of the match.

Final score Derby Elks RL 48 Todmorden ARLFC 10

Defensively the Elks performed brilliantly in the first half ensuring that they established themselves in a dominant position. The second half level dropped and Todmorden gained pressure through some poor decision making by the Elks who had to work harder than necessary. Great to see returning players, promising debut from Dan Wilson but the Ilkeston RUFC Chairman’s man of the match award goes to Hooker George Doughty.

Very grateful to Todmorden making the trip down and all stoping after the match. Look forward to seeing them in a couple of weeks at their place.

Competition is increasing at Derby with a number of players not available this week which bodes well as the club continues to develop.
