Match Report: Derby Elks v Sherwood Wolfhunt – 20/08/22

The last home match of Derby Elks Yorkshire escapade couldn’t have come against a bigger opposition! Top of the league fellow Midlands Sherwood Wolfhunt made the short journey to the Stute.

The corresponding fixture at Debdale had been a one sided event to the home side and with both sides missing a number of regular starters it was always uncertain how the balance would weigh.

Derby received and played up hill for the first half and we’re immediately held in their 30 metres area. Close play to the side of the post saw Sherwood score after only 4 minutes. 0.6 to Sherwood.

Even 10-15 minutes finally saw the Elks moving up the pitch, although at times unforced errors and infringements put them backwards but a break down the right by Centre Cyrus Griffiths and Wing Ollie McMahon followed by quick play saw Hooker George Doughty fall over the metre distance to score converted by McMahon. 6.6

Wolfhunt had the lions share of the remainder of the half scoring two tries, one of which was converted to give a half time score. Derby Elks RL 6 Sherwood Wolfhunt RL 16

The Elks came out the second half the more alert and replacement Hooker Joshua Jackson scored after 5 minutes again converted by McMahon 12.16 to Sherwood.

8 minutes later an opportunist debut try for Derby by McMahon saw him slip over in the corner, converting his own try 18.16 to Derby.

The last ten minutes saw the visitors start to grind out the result, constant pressure to the Derby line saw three tries scored of which two were converted.

Unsure that the final score reflected the closeness of the game, although Sherwood Wolfhunt worthy winners for the first 60 minutes or so it could have gone either way which after the previous fixture was a vast improvement by the ever improving Derby Elks.
