‘Derby Elks RLFC finally returned to play their first match at their home at Ilkeston rugby club after some much needed remedial work on the pitches and we welcomed Seacroft Sharks RL from Leeds for round 3 of the Yorkshire Mens League 4 structure.

The Yorkshire team arrived early in great numbers and the weather was glorious so it was a perfect opportunity to impress the ground today. Sadly from the off the Elks side seemed lethargic and quiet during the warm up even though they had been putting in pleasing performances so far this season but something was missing!

After such a strange warm up combined with the personnel changes Derby started the better team, playing up the pitch and into a erratic breeze it was the home side that scored two unanswered tries, firstly Cyrus Griffiths scored to the right of the posts with an opportunist try converted by Hooker Niall Collett after only four minutes, to be followed by WInger Sam Adeys first try of the day handing off his opposite number in the Elks 30 metre line and breaking almost untouched up the left wing to score, unconverted on this occasion. ten minutes gone, 10-0 to the home side.

Seacroft finally awoke and in the next six minutes scored two well worked converted tries with the Sharks Hooker taking advantage of lazy marker play and upped the momentum. 10-12 to Seacroft.

Much of the first half was even between the sides with both making changes to combat the heat and injuries that were occuring. With just 10 minutes of the half remaining Derby scored one of their better tries with Scrum Half George Doughty kicking cross field for his Half Back Griffiths to score an unconverted try.

Half Time – Derby Elks RL 14 Seacroft Sharks 12

Second half started well again for the home side with Debutant Charlie Clarke scoring his first try in the right hand corner. Seacroft responded with a try of their own and this pretty much became the pattern for the afternoon.

Bayleigh Steemson Weir took a tight pass from Captain Joe Doughty to score between the posts after 62 minutes of the game converted by Collett. WIth 18 minutes left of the match the score was Derby Elks 24 Seacroft Sharks 16.

Sharks scored another converted try to bring it to 24 to 22. Sam Adey returned to the pitch and again scored in the corner to make it 28 to 22 with 9 minutes to play.

Sadly this was not to be the Elks day as continued pressure and sustained injuries the Sharks showed their experience to score two converted tries with the latter with just a couple of minutes to go.

Full time came with Derby Elks RL 28 versus Seacroft Sharks RL 34

A good performance for the ever developing Elks team, knowing that they could have won that game but with two more debuts today from Clarke and Josh Jarvis, all the players putting in a great stint we can reflect and know what we need to build on.

The Ilkeston RUFC Chairman’s man of the match award went to Sailosi Wakawaka who with his centre mate of Abe Su’a defended well and attacked at the right time, actually this award could have gone to a number of players for their attitude and performance on the pitch. Just all need to sort out the pre match requirements.

A week off for all players then we return with a Midlands Merit League match away at Nottingham Outlaws A on Friday the 3rd of June with an 8pm kick off. Support is always welcomed and appreciated.
