Match Report: Derby Elks v Dodworth Miners 22/07/23

Round 8

Derby Elks RL 6 Dodworth Miners RL 24

Dodworth laying in 2nd position in the league made the journey down to the Stute to play on a day of torrential downpour typical of a British Summer.

The well drilled away team were the first to put points on the board, scoring from some lapse defending, unconverted after 4 minutes 0.4

Derby were always going to have a tough day, enforced positional changes made the team light but this didn’t deter the Elks from making yards up the pitch.

After 10 minute’s Dodworth noticed lapse marker play and scored a converted try just to the side of the posts 0.10

Playing up hill Derby endeavoured to break the Miners line, occasionally breaking however dropped ball always resulted in ball turn over and scrums.

Just over 10 minutes to half time the home side had been camped in the Dodworth 20 metres area and a deft kick through by returning Half Back Jamie Baxter saw Sailosi Wakawaka drop on the ball between the posts converted by Dan Wilson 6.10

Derby lost their Captain Joe Doughty through injury who was quickly followed by Winger Ellis Jackson.

Five minutes later Dodworth crossed the white wash again to score a unconverted try meaning at half time scores were Derby Elks RL 6 Dodworth Miners RL 10

Injuries continued for the home side with Oscar Tatham now leaving the field. Whilst this effected the depth and rotation of the Elks team they still competed with Dodworth and both teams attempted to get the advantage.

In close succession Dodworth scored two tries with one converted exposing gaps and tiredness in the home sides defence. 6.24

Throughout the second half Derby continued to work hard for each other and only simple handling errors and penalties were their downfall. Better team on the day taking the win and with a return match in two weeks it’s an opportunity for the Elks to raise their game.
