Match Report: Derby Elks v Dearne Valley Bulldogs 24/06/2023


Round 6 – Derby Elks RL 42 Dearne Valley Bulldogs RL 18

Derby looking to continue their positive start to the season welcomed Dearne Valley Bulldogs to the Stute.

Blistering conditions with the threat of rain storms not arriving resulting need for regular water breaks!

Elks kicked off and the first ten minutes was with both sides trying to gain some initial dominance, evenly matched but Prop Lewis Sturgess barged through failing tackles to score the first try of the day, converted by Half Dan Wilson 6.0

Dearne hit back almost immediately, a drop from the kick off put the away team in Derbys half, light tackling allowed the Dearne to score a converted try 6.6

Five minutes later a kick through, fantastic footwork leaving the Full Back lost by Second Row Charlie Clarke allowed him to score between the posts, converted by Wilson 12.6

Ten minutes later Joshua Jackson twisted and turned and avoided the tackles to score, again converted by Wilson 18.6

Hooker George Doughty was the next to be rewarded with a try with a trade mark dive through the legs of the Bulldogs, converted by Wilson 24.6

You would have thought with just minutes to go of the half Derby had established themselves well but the Bulldogs continued to show their never give up attitude and scored a replica of their first try to bring the scores to 24.12 at half time.

The young Elks side were the first out of the blocks again in the second half, Captain Joe Doughty picking up a loose ball to run half of the pitch to score between the posts, converted by Wilson 30.12

Centre Alex Brown next to score and make it 2 tries in 2 games for the season stepping in and leaving the Dearne defence fixed, converted by Wilson 36.12

With just 7 minutes to go, Dearne Valley scored between the posts as the Derby players had switched off due to their position 36.18

Last play of the match and with gaps starting to appear Half Liam Gavin broke a tackle and sprinted off pursued by the Bulldogs backs to score between the posts. Converted by Wilson.

Great spirited game, both teams entertaining the crowd, thanks to Dearne for travelling down and we wish them all the best for the rest of the season.

Performances from Wilson, who bossed their game and 7 from 7 kicks, Captain Joe Doughty putting in his usual performance but all players contributed with a disciplined performance but the Ilkeston RUFC Chairmans man of the match went to Joel Naylor

Next week sees a friendly at the Stute against Sheffield Forgers.
