Match Report: Dearne Valley Bulldogs v Derby Elks 12/08/23

Dearne Valley Bulldogs RL 46 Derby Elks RL 30

Looking to bounce back from last week’s defeat away at second place Dodworth Miners RL the Elks travelled to Dearne with much optimism.

Sadly this soon diminished, poor warm up, followed by a Bulldog side looking to avenge the defeat at the Stute.

What we saw was 17 minutes where Dearne dictated practically everything with the Derby players unfocused, this led to the Elks being down 22 points already.

Finally after 21 minutes Derby awoke, a typical kick by Hooker Joshua Jackson just over the defensive line saw Daryl Sanders pick up the ball to score between the posts, converted by Dan Wilson. Dearne Valley Bulldogs 22 Derby Elks 6

Short lived sadly as the Bulldogs ran in a couple more tries to extend their dominance, Derby finished the half the stronger with a break from the half way line by Joe Acton saw him cross the whitewash, converted by Wilson.

Second half started similarly to the first with Dearne continuing their dominance and the young Elks unable to gain traction on the pitch. The Bulldogs running in three tries. 46.12 to Dearne with 20 minutes to go.

Backs to the wall and finally the Elks awoke, firstly after 66 minutes Full Back Lewis Thompson picked up a pass and weaved through the 30 metres of his half to finally break and run the rest of pitch rounding the opposition full back to score. Converted by Wilson.

Only three minutes and again Derby broke, Acton almost rounding the full back but bravely tackled, only for a quick distribution to Alex Brown to drive through to score between the posts. Converted by Wilson. Dearne Valley Bulldogs 46 Derby Elks 24.

Score starting to look a little more respectable but only 10 minutes to go! Next over the line was Centre Oscar Tatham again converted by Wilson.

Sadly this was all that the Elks would get from this game, some pride was restored, taking the opportunity of the tiring Bulldog players.
