Match Report: Crigglestone Allblacks RL 30 Derby Elks RL 16

First away match of the season saw the young Elks travelling up towards Wakefield to play Crigglestone Allblacks. This was the first meeting in 2 seasons and the away team were buoyant after last weeks home win against Lindley St Josephs.

Unfortunately, this was soon extinguished as within the first 6 minutes the home side exposed the defence to score between the posts and convert 6.0. The Derby coaching staff suspected this could be a long afternoon but in fairness the next twenty minutes or so were an even contest. Crigglestone attempted to break around the edges with their size but generally were rebuffed by the Elks.

On the 31st minute quick play by Half Back Liam Gavin down the right side to Hooker George Doughty who put a wide long pass in for replacement Winger Billy Cullen to cross in the corner, unconverted and bringing the scores to 6.4

Just five minutes later after a scrum in the Allblacks thirty metres from a knock on Derby drove down the left side for a couple of tackles then a searching pass from Half Back Cyrus Griffiths found Captain Joe Doughty drifting through the defence to score his 4th try of the season between the posts, converted by Griffiths, 6.10

Straight from the kick off a loose carry by the Derby player resulted in a scrum in their 20 metres, quick set ensured the clock was stopped allowing the home side to re set their structure, this was unnecessary as the ever present Hooker picked up the ball from the back of the scrum and ran directly to a surprised Elks defence, converted as half time came.

Crigglestone kicked off with the Elks now with the sun in their faces, Gavin took a high kick and decided to run the ball in however the ball was displaced allowing the home side an immediate attacking position.

This was rewarded after 8 minutes with a converted try for the home side. Extending the score to 18.10

Five minutes later Derby attacked the left hand side which had been fruitful most of the day and appeared to be getting very little change out of the defence as the tackles counted up however a step in and out by Griffiths again released the Captain to score his second of the match between the posts, converted by Griffiths 18.16 and the game was in a great position with 24 minutes to go.

Whilst the match had been an entertaining event for the crowd that had turned out the game was effectively over a minute later as lapse tackling allowed Crigglestone to score a converted try 24.16. This was followed 12 minutes with a well-played try, again converted bring the scores to 30.16 to the home side.

An entertaining match with the home sides Half Backs and Hooker putting an immense performance in and dictating the sides play. Derby Elks played well and know what they need to work on, but there were outstanding performances from Griffiths, Doughty brothers and Gavin and if some of the dropped passes and discipline could have been improved this could have maybe gone a different direction!

Ilkeston RUFC Chairmans Man of the Match award goes to the ever improving Galway Hargreaves following on from his debut try last week.
